A 20-year-old Shishmaref snowmachiner died Sunday after crashing into a local ditch, according to Alaska State Troopers.

In a Monday AST dispatch, troopers say they were told of the crash, involving Jay J. Weyiouanna, just before 10 p.m. Sunday.

“(Weyiouanna) was witnessed driving a snowmachine into a ditch and crashing,” troopers wrote. “Weyiouanna was the only occupant on the machine.”

Troopers spokesperson Megan Peters noted Weyiouanna was moving at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the snow machine.

"He had no control as he went over a series of bumps, then flew off the machine when it went into the ditch," Peters said.

The snow machine then went another 75 feet and stopped, Peters said.

Peters also said alcohol is suspected to have contributed to the accident, but a toxicology report will have to be done to determine if he was under the influence.

Weyiouanna’s next of kin have been notified, and his body has been requested by the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
