ANCHORAGE -

Community, strength and inspiration, three attributes that were on display this weekend at the 2014 Special Olympic Alaska Summer Games in Anchorage.

For three days, hundreds of athletes from across the state participated in a number of sports including traditional and unified basketball, swimming and power lifting.

While taking home a gold is always a plus, for everyone involved, these games are about so much more.

"Whether you win or lose, it's about doing your personal best," said Jim Balamaci, CEO Special Olympics Alaska.  "Whether you're a partner or an athlete, when we all do our personal best good things happen."

The closing ceremony was held Sunday at East High School.  Several gold medalist from the games this weekend will head to New Jersey at the end of the month to compete for the national title at the USA games.
