An investigation by the Anchorage Police Department revealed "substantial doubt" about an alleged interaction between an Alaska Regional Hospital security guard and a 17-year-old girl.
Assistant district attorney Jenna Gruenstein announced Friday that, as a result of the investigation, all charges against 56-year-old John Giacalone were dismissed.
The girl claimed that Giacalone, who has a full-time job as a forensic scientist at the state crime laboratory, approached her while she was asleep and then lured her to a secluded office where she was assaulted.
While an initial investigation suggested there was something to the claims, a closer look revealed the state's case was too weak to move forward.
"There exists substantial doubt as to what occurred on the night in question," Gruenstein wrote in a release.
