The City of Wasilla and Alaska State Troopers are investigating a mysterious string of thefts along Old Mat Road.

What's strange about the thefts is what was stolen: 18 fire hydrant caps.

According to troopers, each cap will cost $300 to replace, with a total of $5,400 that will come out of the city's budget, largely paid for by the city's sale tax and other charges.

Anyone with information on the thefts is encouraged to call troopers at 352-5401, or Mat-Su CrimeStoppers at 745-3333.
