ANCHORAGE -

[UPDATE Mar. 3 12:34 p.m.]

A 17-year-old white male was taken into custody at the McLaughlin Youth Center, Anchorage Police spokesperson Anita Shell said.

APD confirmed Monday that the suspect faces felony charges for burglary and criminal mischief.

Police said the damage, estimated around $25,000, constitutes burglary because the suspect was in the building unlawfully "with intent to commit a crime in the building."

[STORY Mar. 2 1:21 p.m.] A local non-profit organization was vandalized after a break in early Sunday, police confirm.

The Alaska branch of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, located on Fireweed and A Street, was “broken into and completely trashed”, according to Jennifer Martin, an MDA representative.

Security guards making their rounds initially discovered the damage around 9 am. The suspect had fled the property by then, and police were called in to investigate. Papers were reportedly strewn throughout the offices and halls, items were pulled off the walls, and windows were broken, some shards covered in blood.

“Now it’s time to clean up,” said Martin. “We’re just going to board up the windows at this point, and try to start getting through this tomorrow. That’s all we can really do at this point.”
