Alaska transportation officials say local airport contractors from rural villages recently received training on various responsibilities, including airport operations, safety, lighting system maintenance, and equipment operation and maintenance.

Representatives of 13 villages attended weeklong classes at the Fairbanks Pipeline Training Center.

Officials say two separate sessions of training were held, with some students attending the first week of October, and others the following week.

Officials say the state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities worked with partnerships, including the pipeline training center, to provide the training.

According to officials, major funding for the effort came from a grant from the federally funded Denali Commission.
