An Anchorage-based group has proposed a new downtown park that would cost millions, but has yet to attach an official price tag, at the Make-It-Monday forum.
Former University of Alaska President, Mark Hamiliton, and current Chairman of the Remembrance Foundation, presented a plan of a park filled with exhibits on national history.
“What we're probably - aiming our heads on is having an education opportunity for the kids of the Anchorage area to come in and take a look at it,” Hamilton said. “It's a 30 minute walk, with your teacher and it would give you a foundation of things that Americans ought to know and ought to remember.”
The Remembrance Foundation hopes to feature 13 exhibits of national history along a short walk, including a replica of the Liberty Bell, remnants of the U.S.S. Arizona and a twisted piece of steel from the Twin Towers.
“We had engineer students as kind of a capstone project with their professors come down and do all of the land suitability and we've also had some architectural students from the University [of Anchorage Alaska] share with us their concept of some of these buildings,” Hamilton said.
The park would be located in the grassy area below the parking lot where summer downtown market is held – also known as the “buttress” area of downtown Anchorage in between W 2nd and 3rd Ave.
