Nome Throws Kaatiluta Festival

(Snowflake Media / November 25, 2012)

The community of Nome came together Saturday night in honor of Alaska Native and Native American heritage month.

Folks gathered at the Nome recreation center for a festival called Kaatiluta, which means "all of us together" in Inupiaq.

Organizers say Nome is such a diverse community and they wanted to do something to recognize and celebrate the different cultures.

There was Alaska Native dancing and drumming, and a traditional foods potluck.

Organizers say the festival wouldn't have been possible without the help from organizations and individuals in the community of Nome.

It was the first year of the festival.
