Mary Elizabeth Fisher, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at her home on Burt Lake surrounded by her family.
Mary was born on May 10, 1922, in Owensboro, Ky. She was the daughter of Francis and Marie (Hardwick) Rudd. She moved with her family to Detroit where she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. Mary received her registered nursing degree from Providence Hospital.
World War II serving as a U.S. Army nurse in the European Theater. Upon her discharge in 1946, she returned to Detroit to continue studies at Wayne State University and went to work for the City of Detroit as a public health nurse.
On July 31, 1948, she married Daniel C. Fisher in Detroit. The couple made their home in Detroit, later moving to Grand Rapids, Toledo, and Marion, Ohio. In 1975, the Fisher family moved to their cottage on Burt Lake.
Mary was a member of the Cross in the Woods Catholic parish and a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. She was a founding member of the Indian River Area Library and served in various capacities as president, treasurer and secretary from 1976-1992. She had a love of learning but most of all she treasured spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her husband, Dan; children, Mary E. (Gerald) Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio, Katherine A. (James) Holcomb of Los Angeles, Calif., Daniel C. (Nancy) Fisher III of Chattanooga, Tenn., Barbara J. Fisher of Chevy Chase, Md., Michael F. (Marcella) Fisher of St. Clair Shores, Mich., Margaret T. (Michael) LaChapelle of Albany, N.Y., Paul S. (Amy) Fisher of Milwaukee, Wis., Genevieve E. (Stephen) King of Petoskey, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Van (Ann) Rudd of Klamath Falls, Ore., Michael (Marjorie) Rudd of Ann Arbor, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Mary A. Harrington of Burt Lake, Mich., Rosemary Fisher of Burt Lake, Mich., Jane Fisher of Columbus, Ohio, Pat Fisher of Green Valley, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cross in the Woods parish or Hospice of the Straits.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at the Cross in the Woods Catholic Church in Indian River. The Rev. Michael Fowler, O.F.M., will officiate. Interment will be at the Shrine Cemetery in Indian River. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 22, at the Cross in the Woods, Indian River, with a scripture service at 6 p.m.
