The American Red Cross is increasing its relief operation to provide food, shelter, supplies and comfort to more people affected by superstorm Sandy, but donations — including blood — are still desperately needed.
The entire Red Cross fleet of 320 response vehicles has been activated to distribute hot meals, water, snacks and supplies. In addition, thousands of people continue to seek refuge in shelters and millions are still without power.
Those wishing to help can make a donation to support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief by visiting www.redcross.org, calling (800) RED-CROSS or texting the word “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation. You can also use the “donate” feature on the free Red Cross App for mobile devices to support this relief response.
Contributions may also be sent to local Red Cross chapters, or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013.
In addition, more than 360 Red Cross blood drives have been canceled because of the storm, representing a loss of as many as 12,000 blood and platelet products. People who are eligible, especially in places not affected by the storm, are asked to schedule a donation appointment in the days and weeks to come.
Locally, a blood drive will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Petoskey High School.
A drive will also be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Boyne Falls School.
A list of other area blood drives and donation information can be found at www.redcrossblood.org.
