Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski suggests she'll break with fellow Republicans if they approve a ban on earmark requests.
The GOP conference is set to vote on the issue next week. Murkowski won't be allowed to participate in that vote, because she hasn't yet won re-election. Her race against GOP rival Joe Miller still hasn't been finalized.
Murkowski tells The Associated Press a ban won't make much of a difference in overall federal spending and would leave the prioritization of projects to bureaucrats rather than those who know the needs of a state.
Asked whether she'd abide by a ban if one's approved, she said she'd work to ensure Alaska's interests are advanced.
She said she won't sit by and let decisions about Alaska's infrastructure needs to be left to some agency.
