Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell is urging the federal Food and Drug Administration not to approve genetically engineered Atlantic salmon for human consumption.

The governor wrote to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg this week questioning whether there has been enough scrutiny of the issue.

In a statement Saturday, Parnell says he's worried modified salmon could jeopardize the health of wild salmon stocks.

A Massachusetts company has developed the fish to grow twice as fast as its conventional counterparts. The FDA has not yet decided whether the fish can be marketed or labeled.
