ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
Prescription drugs that are unused or unwanted have a new place to go this week: three new lockboxes across Anchorage, unveiled Thursday by the Anchorage Police Department along with the Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility and the city Department of Health and Human Services.DHHS says that having unwanted prescriptions around the home can present many dangers to other people who may come across them.
One dropoff location is at APD headquarters at 4501 Elmore Rd., while another is at the University Police Department. Officials say they are still trying to come up with a location for the third box.
APD officials say each box cost about $800. They say the money for the program came from seized drug money.
According to APD, it will see how the program goes with three boxes before deciding on ordering any more.
