A 20-year-old Salcha man was rescued Wednesday afternoon after falling while mountain climbing near Fairbanks, according to Alaska State Troopers.

A Thursday AST dispatch says Fairbanks troopers received two reports at about 1:15 p.m. that Jason Zesiger had fallen in an area about 1.5 miles from a trailhead at the Angel Rocks recreation area, off Chena Hot Springs Road, about 50 miles east of Fairbanks.

Zesiger sustained head, leg and hip injuries in the fall, and his rescue was further complicated by communications difficulties in the area.

First responders including a trooper, a public safety wildlife technician and two park rangers hiked in and arrived at the scene at about 3:45 p.m. Zesiger’s injuries were evaluated by Fairbanks Wilderness Search and Rescue personnel who arrived at 4:30 p.m., and he was transported via rescue litter to the trailhead by 6:15 p.m.

A waiting Steese Volunteer Fire Department ambulance then took Zesiger to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
