With some Alaskans unable to afford presents for their children this Christmas, there’s still time to drop off toy donations at the Salvation Army for its Neighborhood GIFT program.

The group especially needs presents for newborns to 3-year-olds, as well as young teenagers.

Neighborhood GIFT is for families who need a little bit of help this christmas. While parents pick up a special present for their children, the Food Bank of Alaska will also make sure they have a Christmas dinner to take home.

The Salvation Army says last year it donated about 11,000 toys, and expects to donate about 12,000 toys this year.

“Anything like Legos, sports equipment, craft supplies, the light-up stuff, anything that -- pillows, anything in that area,” said Salvation Army Maj. George Baker. “Those types of toys work well for the teens; for the infants, the typical baby-rattle things, the things that help kids learn and grow.”

Neighborhood GIFT is on Dec. 22 this year.
