Students at Scenic Park Elementary School learned the gift of giving Wednesday by collecting change for the Children's Hospital at Providence Alaska Medical Center.

Student council members at Scenic Park met earlier and decided to run a holiday fundraiser for other kids in the community. Their original goal was to raise $500 in a two-week period, but they wound up doubling that by raising $1,000.

While the students earned the chance to throw a pie at their teachers’ faces by reaching that goal, those same instructors say that wasn't the most important lesson their students learned.

“I think that the fact that they helped raise money for kids their own age that are sick in the hospital, and knowing they have a direct impact from their actions -- I think it's gonna help build that self esteem,” said third-grade teacher Judi Westfall. “And I think it's gonna help them build that caring and consideration to wanna help others.”

Teachers say they'll raise their expectations for the fundraiser next year by starting off with a goal of $1,000.
