ADFG biologist Jessy Coltrane says the 3-year-old bear was killed in the Oceanview area, near the intersection of Johns Road and Huffman Road, after it killed a moose calf and dragged it into the area. She said the bear wasn’t doing anything wrong, but that its presence in a residential neighborhood was inherently dangerous.
Alaska Wildlife Troopers and Fish and Game officials responded to the scene, but were unable to place the bear with a refuge and were forced to shoot it.
Southcentral Alaska has seen many incidents involving bears in recent weeks, including a bear that was euthanized last month after numerous reports of aggressive behavior along the Turnagain Arm Trail, as well as a bear that was shot after it returned to a Rabbit Creek home where it had previously killed a llama.
The encounters have prompted repeated warnings from authorities, who advise people traveling in bear country to carry bear spray, travel with others and be aware of their surroundings.
