Sen. Ted Stevens through the years
Born in 1923 in Indiana, Theodore Fulton Stevens served in the Army Air Corps before going to law school, becoming a practicing lawyer, and eventually becoming one of the most prolific lawmakers in history, serving for 40 years in the U.S. Senate -- the longest-serving Republican to date. After being defeated in 2008 by Democrat Mark Begich, Stevens largely stayed out of the limelight. He was killed in a float plane crash August 9, 2010 near Dillingham, Alaska, on his way from a fishing lodge to a fishing site.
