Three men were arrested Saturday in two separate cases of sexual assault, both of which Anchorage police say involved intoxicated suspects.

According to APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker, 43-year-old Ethmer Rader III was arrested Saturday on one count of second-degree attempted sexual assault, while his friend Lawrence Nicolaides, 33, was arrested on one count each of first-degree and second-degree sexual assault, as well as tampering with evidence.

Investigators believe Rader and Nicolaides met two women while drinking Downtown, then took them to a Spenard hotel room and sexually assaulted them while they were incapacitated.

“One victim awoke while she was being sexually assaulted and tried to get Nicolaides to stop the assault, which he did not,” Parker said in a statement Monday. “(Nicolaides), when taken into custody for evidence collection attempted to remove evidence from his body by cleaning his hands.”

In a separate incident, police arrested 25-year-old Steven Kashevarof Saturday on one count each of first-degree attempted sexual assault, as well as second-degree and third-degree sexual assault. The victim told police her roommate invited Kashevarof, who had been drinking in local bars, to her residence to continue drinking while she was sleeping. She woke up during the night to find Kashevarof assaulting her in her room.

All three suspects were arrested without bail and arraigned Sunday.

Parker says alcohol is a frequent factor in sexual assaults, but it’s never a valid excuse for them.

“No matter how drunk someone is they don’t deserve to be a victim of sexual assault, and no matter how drunk someone is they shouldn’t commit sexual assaults -- end of story,” Parker said.
