A Thursday fire that severely damaged an excavator in South Anchorage was arson according to local firefighters, who are seeking those responsible for setting the blaze.
AFD units responded Thursday to Titan Topsoil, near West 106th Avenue and C Street, where a large vehicle fire engulfing the excavator had been reported.
“The operator’s cab was fully involved with fire starting to extend into the engine compartment area under the cowling,” AFD spokesperson Al Tamagni Jr. wrote in a Monday statement on the fire. “The equipment was heavily damaged and the estimated loss is $50,000 to $75,000.”
While the fire didn’t cause any injuries, investigators determined that its cause was incendiary in nature.
Firefighters are asking anyone with information on the cause of the excavator fire to call Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP or visit its website. Crime Stoppers callers remain anonymous and may receive rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to arrests in felony crimes.
