Valerie Sifsof Searchers Find Sweatshirt Near Six Mile Creek (October 9, 2012) |
Searchers for Valerie Sifsof told Alaska State Troopers Sunday they had found a sweatshirt that belonged to her, the latest development in a three-month-long search for the missing woman.
According to a Monday AST dispatch, Sifsof's family said the sweatshirt was discovered on the bank of Six Mile Creek, about half a mile downriver from the Granite Creek Campground. A search of the area involving more than two dozen people took place Sunday, with lines of people walking side-by-side and boaters checking nearby waterways.
Sifsof, 43, was last seen leaving a campsite early on the morning of July 8, when family members say she argued with her boyfriend and left behind her keys, identification and cellphone. Since Sifsof’s disappearance, more than a dozen searches have been conducted for her, while a reward for information on her whereabouts has grown to more than $27,000.
Troopers say a kayaker in late August found a shirt that belonged to Sifsof near the same area of the creek, which has recently been inundated by significant flooding and rain.
“On Oct. 1, an Alaska State Trooper flew over the area in search of Sifsof and counted four large log jams in (the) vicinity (of) where the clothing was found,” troopers wrote. “AST will search the area using cadaver dogs as soon as conditions allow.”
Valerie Sifsof stands 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs around 135 pounds; she has black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a black DKNY zip-up sweatshirt with navy sweatpants and black boots.
