An Anchorage man remains in critical condition after he was seriously injured Wednesday morning on the Parks Highway near Houston when his car struck a moose, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Providence Alaska Medical Center officials updated 19-year-old Tanner Heisler's condition Thursday.
A Wednesday Alaska State Troopers dispatch says troopers were informed at about 9:50 a.m. of the collision, at Mile 59 of the Parks near Zero Lake Road. Troopers say Heisler was headed south on the highway in a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu when he hit a moose that stepped into the road.
Heisler suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, for which he was flown to Providence by air ambulance.
AST spokesperson Megan Peters says it’s not clear whether Heisler was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, since medics had already removed him from the Malibu when troopers arrived. There were no serious disruptions to traffic on the highway due to the collision.
Peters says troopers have seen relatively few vehicle collisions with moose so far this winter, which she attributes to moose not being forced onto roads by heavy snowfall.
