Alaska State Troopers say alcohol and controlled substances are believed to have been involved in a three-vehicle crash early Sunday on Knik-Goose Bay Road that left two drivers with minor injuries.
A Monday AST dispatch says troopers from Palmer and the Bureau of Highway Patrol responded at 1:07 a.m. Sunday to the scene, at Knik-Goose Bay’s intersection with Kathilyn Road.
According to troopers, the incident began when a Ford pickup truck headed east on Knik-Goose Bay and driven by 21-year-old Wasilla man Shane Warren started to fishtail.
“The vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a Pontiac Sunfire being driven by Shane Cullison, age 18 of Wasilla,” troopers wrote. “Cullison's vehicle was then struck by a Pontiac Grand Prix being driven by Amber Hubner, age 22 of Wasilla.”
AST spokesperson Beth Ipsen says the extent of injuries in the crash was much less severe than troopers initially feared, with the incident first reported as involving a possible fatality.
Cullison was found unconscious in his vehicle and extricated, then medevaced to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage for treatment. He was released with only bumps and bruises, however, and was talking with troopers when they reached him at home.
Warren was taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, but Ipsen said he only had bumps, bruises and contusions.
Ipsen says the crash remains under investigation. She couldn’t identify anyone involved who may have used alcohol or controlled substances, pending the filing of possible charges.
