A Wasilla Police Department standoff with an armed man near Church Road temporarily brought Parks Highway traffic to a standstill Monday, according to Alaska State Troopers.
AST spokesperson Megan Peters said Wasilla police and troopers conducted a joint response to the incident, which saw the man involved taken into custody shortly before 3:30 p.m.
Peters said the man refused initial requests to put down his weapon, which bystanders described as a knife.
“Multiple tactics were used in trying to end the situation peacefully,” Peters said.
WPD, the lead agency in the case, had no immediate comment but planned to release an official statement.
Witnesses said the man was followed about a mile down the Parks by police and troopers. One of the highway’s northbound lanes was blocked by officers’ vehicles during the incident, but traffic was moving again just after 4 p.m.
