A professional athlete from Lynchburg is spending time with kids in his hometown this week.

Chris Cook is a cornerback for the Minnesota Vikings.  He also played football for the University of Virginia.

Cook was in the news last year after being charged with assaulting his girlfriend.  A jury found him not guilty.

Cook spent time Friday with students at Heritage Elementary School.  He told them about the importance of doing well in school and staying out of trouble.

"I wanted to be totally honest with them, put everything out there, and let them know the mistakes that I've made in my life and they don't have to be the way that I was," Cook said.

Cook is also spending time working this week with an athletic trainer at his alma mater, Heritage High School.
