The Lynchburg state police office is moving to Amherst.

The new Area 20 Office will open Monday on South Main Street in Amherst.

The patrol area that Area 20 covers includes Amherst and Campbell County, and the city of Lynchburg.

The Area 20 Office houses 23 troopers, two sergeants, a first sergeant, and a secretary.

Here is the news release from state police:

After 17 years at its current location, the Virginia State Police Area 20 Office and Area 63 Safety Office in Lynchburg are relocating from their building at 1065 Airport Road to a new facility. On Monday, March 19, 2012, State Police will open its doors at 515 South Main Street in the Town of Amherst. The Area 20 Office patrol territory includes the counties of Amherst and Campbell, and the City of Lynchburg.

The move is a significant cost-savings for state police as the office in Lynchburg was leased and the new facility is existing state property. The Amherst location is a former Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) residency office. The new location not only provides more office space, but also a gas pump for the troopers to use as well as substantial storage facilities.

“This is a tough move for us as Lynchburg has been home for the Area 20 Office since it was established in 1961,” said First Sergeant James L. Hopkins, Area 20 Commander. “But, it simply came down to dollars and cents, and the move is a logical step in our efforts to save the Commonwealth money.”

Hopkins continued, “We want to assure those living and working in Lynchburg and the surrounding area that this move is strictly a change in address and not in presence. Virginia State Police troopers will still be on active patrol and respond to calls throughout our assigned jurisdictions.”

The Area 20 Office is currently authorized for 23 Troopers, two Sergeants, a First Sergeant and Secretary. In 2011, Area 20 troopers responded to 7,811 calls for service; compared to 7,601 in 2010.

The Area 63 Office is authorized for 12 troopers, a First Sergeant and a Secretary. The Area 63 Office is part of the Safety Division and handles all motor carrier and passenger vehicle inspections in the Appomattox Division.
