It's a bittersweet day for Hershey's iconic chocolate factory.
The Derry Township Design Review Board voted four to two Monday night to approve a petition from the Hershey Company to demolish 1.1 million square feet of the old plant.
The plan is to demolish the old buildings and sell the property to developers.
The factory is near and dear to the hearts of people in Derry Township, which is why they showed up in droves for the meeting.
"Once it's gone, it can't come back. This is something that our kids will have to live with if we choose to let it be demolished," said Brady Hummell, a senior at Hershey High School.
Parts of the old factory are already being renovated for office space in Hershey. The meeting involved parts of the east side of the factory campus which was not to be renovated.
