SOUTH BEND -- Indiana democratic senate candidate Joe Donnelly wasted no time getting to the polls this morning.
Donnelly showed up to vote in St. Joseph County shortly after 6 a.m. He's been locked in a contentious race for the US senate seat currently held by Richard Lugar.
After casting his vote, Donnelly talked about what impact he thinks his challenger's last debate comment will have on the outcome of the race.
Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock set off a firestorm when he said pregnancy resulting from rape was something that God intended.
“So I think it just gave people of our state another chance to look at him and make a judgment,” Donnelly said this morning. “We are conservative and common sense and we are not a state that goes for extremes, and that is what he represents.”
A Howey-Depauw poll released last week showed Donnelly up by 11 points over Mourdock. But Mourdock claims to have internal polling showing that he is ahead.
Former Indiana Senator and Governor Evan Bayh was in South Bend this morning with Donnelly. The two also did last minute campaining around the state Monday.
Donelly's race against Mourdock is being watched nationally because it could decide which party controls the Senate.
Bayh says he hopes the negativity of the campaign season will not affect the way lawmakers work with one another when they return to Washington.
“Politics in general has become much too divisive, much too negative. I much prefer the kind of leaders who will tell us what they're going to do in a positive way to move us forward, and I hope that's what we'll get after the election.”

Richard Mourdock spent Monday campaigning with Republican Senator Dan Coats. They made stops in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, New Albany, Terre Haute and Evansville.
On Tuesday Mourdock voted in Evansville.
