CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — Legal experts say an unknown number of criminal cases could be dismissed because of the involvement of six Lake County police officers who newspapers said are targets of a federal investigation.
University of Chicago Law School professor Craig Futterman tells The Times of Munster the officers' involvement could taint the cases.
Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter says his office will determine if any cases need to be dismissed.
None of the officers has been charged. Sheriff John Buncich has placed the six on administrative leave and stripped them of police powers.
The Times and the Post-Tribune of Merrillville reported the six were targets in an investigation involving the sale of guns across state lines, including some weapons owned or confiscated by police.
