Students line up today, Wednesday, at St. Francis Xavier Church to receive smudges of ashes on their foreheads from the parish's pastor, the Rev. Dennis Stilwell (right). The ashes Catholics receive on Ash Wednesday at the beginning of Lent serve as a reminder of people's sinful nature and need for God, and as a sign of penitence.
