Neighborhood: Uptown
Sound: “It’s a toss between post-punk soul and maximum [bleeping] R&B.”
What to expect: “When we play hometown shows we tend to have horns and extra percussion and stuff like that--an extended lineup, so we’re putting that together and trying to put together a 45-minute, all-killer, no-filler set so we can hopefully snag some new fans. [Bleep], we’re playing [bleeping] Lollapalooza, that’s super-awesome.”
Why he perceives JC Brooks as a character separate from himself: “While I try to emote genuinely there’s a bit of affectation, a bit of my theater background that I like to use in the show because it makes it more fun for me and hopefully for people who are watching … I get to be more exciting than I actually am … . I liken it to-you’ve seen “The Mask” or read the comic … I kind of feel like “The Mask” doesn’t give you anything that you’re not, it just amplifies everything that you are. I kind of feel like doing a show is me putting on the mask. It feels like a character but at the same time it’s fun and it’s great to be free and not have to dampen down parts of your personality.”
Advice: “Come out early. ‘Cause we’re playing very early. Be comfortable, no makeup, come ready to dance. We will warm you up for the rest of the evening … People feel comfortable enough with us to dance to our music, which is nice. People like to dance in general but you see shows where they’re not sure, at least from the neck down. I just want people to [bleeping] move around, shake their [bleep] and be amazed at how much better that makes you feel.”
Past Lolla experience: Going in ’94. “Holy [bleep] I’m dating myself … I remember loving Hole.” Why he hasn’t been since: “Either I’m too busy or too broke.”
What Lolla artist would make him star-struck: “Because we’re playing Lollapalooza I will have the opportunity to meet two of my favorite artists. One of them is Merrill Garbus from the Tune-Yards and the other is Frank Ocean because I haven’t been able to stop listening to ‘Channel Orange’ for the last week and a half. I think it is the best album I’ve heard in the past year.
