( AP /Susan Ragan, file / May 19, 2004 ) Jazz drummer Elvin Ray Jones is shown here in October 1997 while performing at the San Francisco Jazz Festival. Jones, a member of John Coltrane's quartet who also played alongside Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, died of heart failure in Englewood, N.J., on Tuesday, May 18, 2004. He was 76. Life magazine called him the worlds greatest rhythmic drummer. Jones entered the Detroit jazz scene in the late 1940s after touring as a stagehand with the Army Special Services show Operation Happiness. By 1955, he was in New York for an unsuccessful audition for the Benny Goodman band and instead joined Charlie Mingus band. In 1960, he became a member of John Coltranes quartet and jazzs most famous drummer. He can be heard on Coltranes A love Supreme and Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard. He later worked with Ellington and put out several solo albums. He continued to tour until last month. |
