( March 23, 2012 ) Spanish River senior Pos.: Forward Ht.: 6-6 Season highlights: Kupferberg, who will play next season at NYU, started all four years for the Sharks and fulfilled a goal of leading Spanish River to its first appearance at the state tournament in Lakeland. He averaged 15.8 points, 14.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists a game and made 55 percent of his shots from the floor this season. He scored 12 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in Spanish River's 71-51 win against district rival John I. Leonard in the regional semifinals. "Evan just killed us inside," Leonard coach Jim Howell said after the game that ended the Lancers' season. He followed that performance by scoring a game-high 22 points, including seven in the decisive fourth quarter of the Sharks' 67-61 win against Deerfield Beach in the regional finals and had a team-high 16 points in a loss to Hialeah Gardens in the Class 8A state semifinals. Comment: Spanish River had a solid starting five that included All-County first-team selection Reggie Love, but Kupferberg was the glue that held the Sharks together. "We're not as good without Evan Kupferberg on the floor," Spanish River coach John Jones said. "He does so many things and he was our vocal leader, too, both on the floor and in the locker room."
