Murder on the Beach, Delray Beach
Wow factor: Year-round Halloween decorations set the mood for this longtime bookstore stocked with 12,000 new and used mysteries, thrillers, horror and true crime books. An antiquarian room is filled with signed first editions. The store bills itself as the "leader in signed books by Florida authors."
Editor's picks: Signed first edition of Thomas Harris' Hannibal ($125); first edition of Michael Connelly's Void Moon ($40); literary luncheons ($25) and dinners ($40) in conjunction with the restaurant next door, Dolce Amore.
History: Original owner Joanne Sinchuk founded the shop in 1996 in Sunny Isles because she was looking for a warm place where there were no mystery book shops, and "Florida had all these great mystery authors." In 2002, she moved it to Delray Beach. The sign outside the shop reads "Mystery Bookstore" because Sinchuk says people get confused and call up for dinner theater tickets. She sold the shop to David Wulf, who also operates Booksmart Enterprises, in 2007, and she remains as store manager.
Who shops here: Mystery book lovers are a loyal group, Sinchuk says. Because there are only about 50 book shops of this genre in the United States, the store attracts a clientele of collectors who desire a more varied selection than the chains offer.
Extracurricular: The shop conducts book signings with local authors including Edna Buchanan and Carl Hiaasen. There also are literary discussions, luncheons and dinners and writers' conferences.
