1986 - Boston Red Sox strikeout ace Roger Clemens, who fanned 238 American League batters this season, was named the American League Cy Young Award winner. Clemens was a unanimous choice, being named first on all 28 ballots, two from each AL city.

1991 - Tom Glavine of the Atlanta Braves captured the National League Cy Young Award. Glavine, who won 20 games this past season, received 19 of 24 first-place votes. Lee Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals was second.

1996 - The Redfield girls' basketball team gave its coach, John Decker, a nice 30th birthday gift, a 55-52 win over Milbank to advance to the State A tournament.

2001 - Shaquille O'Neal poured in 38 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and Kobe Bryant added 28 points and eight assists to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 108-95 National Basketball Association victory over the Orlando Magic.

2006 - Willie Parker rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns and Ben Roethlisberger threw three touchdown passes to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 38-31 National Football League victory over the New Orleans Saints.

2010 - Luke Gassman hauled in a four-yard TD pass from Joe Parsley and Flandreau booted the extra point with 13 seconds left as the Fliers edged Mobridge-Pollock 28-27 in the Class 11B high school football championship game.
