1986 - Mike Schmidt, the 37-year-old third baseman of the Philadelphia Phillies, was named the National League's most valuable player for the third time in his career. Schmidt, who also captured the award in 1980 and 1981, outpolled Houston's Glenn Davis 287-231.
1991 - Northwestern improved to 20-0 on the season with a 71-39 victory over Warner in the championship game of the District 2B high school girls' basketball tournament. Roberta Sparling scored 20 points in the Northwestern victory. Teammate Chris Swanhorst added 18.
1996 - Aberdeen Central senior Jennifer Murphy, with 13.5-point and 8.5-rebound averages, led the Golden Eagles into the State AA girls' basketball tournament for the first time in four years.
2001 - Aaron Glenn and Victor Green each returned an interception for a touchdown and Vinny Testeverde threw a touchdown pass to Lavernius Coles as the New York Jets rolled to a 24-0 National Football League victory over the Miami Dolphins.
2006 - Jamal Lewis rushed for 91 yards and three touchdowns as the Baltimore Ravens, winners of four straight, improved to 8-2 on the season with a 24-10 National Football League victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
2010 - Defending champion Warner advanced to the championship game of the Class B high school volleyball tournament with a three-game sweep over Mt. Vernon in the semifinals. The Monarchs (32-0) will face Arlington, which defeated Parker in the other semifinal, in the title match.
