BROOKINGS -- The Aberdeen Central gymnastics team got off to a good start on Saturday but teetered on its last event of the day.
Aberdeen, which struggled on the balance beam, finished in the middle of the pack at the 11-team Patty Jorgenson Invitational at Brookings.
Watertown won the meet with a team score of 143.150, followed by Mitchell at 136.400. Aberdeen Central was seventh with 129.625 points. Krisia Bramer of Watertown topped the all-around competition with a 36.925 score. The Golden Eagles had just one all-around competitor, Alexis Clark, with a 24th finish with 31.300 points.
Three Aberdeen gymnasts finished among the top eight. Clark tied for seventh in the vault with a mark of 9.00. Taylor Schweitzer and Jenny Janish both earned third-place finishes. Schweitzer received a score of 9.250 in the vault and Janish hit 8.675 in the balance beam. Medals were awarded to the top eight individual finishers.
The Golden Eagles were the very first competitors of the day on the floor exercise.
“I thought the scores were pretty good on the floor, but low,” said Aberdeen coach Jennifer Deutsch. “The judges are cautious in scoring the first events in meets. Vault and bars were about where we normally are. We had two unexpected falls on bars that we don’t normally have. Otherwise the scores were pretty normal.”
Aberdeen’s last event of the day, beam, did not go well.
“Beam is what got us. Larissa (Swanson) stuck her beam routine and Taylor only had one fall. Jenny stuck her beam. The beam was not good with too many falls. I thought the meet started out OK. Then, we got the beam last where we can make it or break it,” said Deutsch.
A pair of young gymnasts, freshman Amber Kallas and eighth grader Tessa Kimbler, competed in a couple of events for the Golden Eagles at the meet.
“It was not a great day on beam and it combined with low scoring,” said Deutsch. “It prepares you for state. It was a little disappointing today but we still saw a lot of good things. We need to focus on beam and trying to stay on it.”
Aberdeen Central takes a short break before its next competition on Thursday at the Watertown Triangular. Sioux Falls O’Gorman will be the third team at the meet.
