Three Eastern South Dakota Conference wrestling teams stand among the top nine leaders after the first day of the Rapid City Wrestling Invitational.
Pierre, the defending State A champion, tops the standings after Friday’s rounds at the big two-day high school wrestling tournament. Pierre has 129-1/2 points followed by Gillette (Wyo.) with 101-1/2. Huron holds down fifth place with 87 points and Aberdeen Central is tied for ninth with 75 points. A trio of Aberdeen Central wrestlers will compete in the semifinal round as the tournament concludes today.
Trevor Hieb recorded three pins at 120 pounds to reach the semifinal. At 138 pounds, Griffin Hieb matched his brother with three pins. Mitch Johnson at 145 pounds used one pin and two decisions to make it to the semifinal. One of his decisions was in overtime.
