The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks captured the ABL title with a convincing two game sweep of the Mat-Su Miners, culminating in Wednesday's 2-1 victory in game two of a best of three Top of the World Series at Mulcahy Stadium. Including postseason play, the Panners finish 24 and 8 this summer against league competition.
In game two, Pepperdine's Brandon Caruso delivered three hits, including an RBI double in the fifth inning that produced the first run of the game. Scott Hurst followed with an RBI double that made it 2-0 Goldpanners.
The Miners closed to gap to 2-1 on Johnny Locher's run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth, but Mat-Su could get no closer.
Andrew Buehler, a 6-5 righthander out of Nebraska Omaha, pitched five innings of relief to cap a great pitching performance by the Panners. They allowed just one run in two combined games against the ABL's National Division winners.
The Goldpanners will now travel to the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas, a tournament they have won six times.
