Schools representing Anchorage, Southwest Alaska, the Southeast region, Fairbanks, and Prince William Sound all collected victories in round one of the ASAA Volleyball Tournament in Wasilla.
In the 3A quarterfinals, Dillingham remained perfect on the season by sweeping Seward in three straight games, 25-23, 25-14, 25-22. The Wolverines move on to play Mt. Edgecumbe in the semifinals. The Braves, runner-up in 3A last season, dominated Eielson in three games, 25-14, 25-15, 25-12.
The match of the day featured Valdez out-slugging Petersburg, 25-21, 21-25, 25-13, 21-25, 16-14. Up next for the Buccaneers will be 2010 champion Grace Christian. The Grizzlies stymied a good effort from Barrow, 20-25, 28-26, 25-10, 25-21.
In the 4A tournament, three-time defending champion Dimond breezed past Juneau in the quarterfinals, 25-12, 25-14, 25-22. The Lynx advance to play West Valley in the semifinals. The Wolfpack fought off Kodiak in four tough games, 25-23, 27-25, 20-25, 25-18.
On the other side of the draw, Cook Inlet Conference champion South mauled Wasilla in three games, 25-6, 25-20, 25-18 to stay undefeated. The Wolverines will battle Palmer for the right to get back to the finals. The Moose took down Chugiak, 24-26, 25-14, 25-23, 25-15.
All of the action takes place at Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla.
