3 - Michael Phelps wins 17th Olympic gold, taking first in the 100-meter butterfly. It is his last individual gold.

6 - Hagerstown native Christian Binford picks up first professional baseball victory, pitching Burling, N.C., past Pulaski in the Appalachian League.

18 - Southern Cal is The Associated Press’ preseason No. 1 choice in college football.
