THURMONT, Md. — Smithsburg came to life with five runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie, bouncing back from its first loss of the season with a hard-earned 7-4 victory over Catoctin (5-3, 5-2) in an MVAL Antietam contest Friday.

Karah Knight had a double, a solo home run and two RBIs for the Leopards (9-1, 7-1). Shayla Murray had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. Kayla Huntzberry had three hits, Sam Gladhill had two RBIs and Cara Ferguson had two hits and an RBI.

Kopp competing in decathlon

GRANTHAM, Pa. — Hagerstown Community College freshman Kenny Kopp, a Boonsboro graduate, was in fourth place in the decathlon after the first day of competition Thursday at Messiah University.

Kopp had 2,845 points through five events — the 100 (12.14 seconds), the 400 (53.55), the long jump (18 feet, 11 3/4 inches), the high jump (6-0) and the shot put (26-5 1/2).

Kopp performed in the pole vault, discus, javelin, 110 hurdles and 1,500 on Friday. Results were not available at press time.

Allen scores hole-in-one

Kevin Allen, of Boonsboro, recorded the first hole-in-one of his 25-year playing career, using an 8-iron to ace the 153-yard, par-3 15th hole at Black Rock.

The shot was witnessed by Jim Allen and Max Rinker.
