COLLEGE SOFTBALL
NORTH EAST, Md. — Hagerstown Community College scored five runs in the fifth inning — all with two outs — and Megan Peomroy went the distance as the sixth-seeded Hawks beat third-seeded Cecil Community College 5-2 in the play-in round of the Region XX Tournament on Tuesday.
Candace Horchner hit a two-run triple, Brittany Heller’s RBI single capped a 3-for-4 day, and Kayla Ewing added a two-run double for HCC.
The Hawks qualified for the final four Saturday at Catonsville. HCC will play No. 2-seed Chesapeake at 10 a.m.

Hawks compete at districts
NEWARK, N.J. — Hagerstown Community College competed at the NJCAA Eastern District Championships this past weekend. The women placed second out of four teams and the men finished third out of five teams.
Whitney Murphy placed first in the javelin (83-4), third in the 100 (13.04) and fourth in the 200 (27.07) to lead the HCC women, while Paige Goebelbecker won the 5,000 (20:43.61), Amber Elliott was third in the long jump (14-5 1/2), fourth in the javelin (64-0), fifth in the 100 (13.52) and sixth in the 200 (28.90), Yolonda Pinkcett was third in the shot put (27-1) and third in the javelin (79-0), Kerri Gasior was third in the 1,500 (5:29.92) and eighth in the 800 (2:39.54), Victoria Broadwater was sixth in the 100 (14.47) and Ashley Smothers was sixth in the 400 (1:06.48).
Mike Salguero was the runner-up in both the 5,000 (16:07.92) and 10,000 (32:48.65) for the HCC men, while Prince Dawkins also finished second in two events — the long jump (20-11 1/2) and triple jump (46-2).
Also for the Hawks men, Kenny Kopp was second in the high jump (6-0), third in the pole vault (11-0) and sixth in the long jump (18-7), Justin Gunne was second in the javelin (138-8), fifth in the discus (109-0) and sixth in the hammer (81-0), Ryan Schnarrs was second in the hammer (92-9), fourth in the javelin (115-5 1/2) and sixth in the shot put (34-0), Brandon Horning was second in the 1,500 (4:15.0) and sixth in the 800 (2:08.87), Andy Drum was third in the 5,000 (17:02.48) and fourth in the 10,000 (34:18.35), Wyatt Funk was third in the high jump (5-9), Charlie Seabright was fourth in the hammer (82-11), sixth in the discus (94-7 1/2) and sixth in the javelin (114-3), Luis Majano was fourth in the 800 (2:08.13), Rodney Flora was fifth in the 400 (51.44) and fifth in the high jump (5-6), Ryan Kaiser was fifth in the 1,500 (4:31.67), Stephen Starliper was sixth in the 1,500 (4:35.07).
The HCC men also placed third in the 4x800 (8:47.82) and fourth in the 4x400 (3:45.11).

Ritter honored at Seton Hall
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — North Hagerstown graduate Katie Ritter was a tri-recipient of Seton Hall University’s Female Sophomore Athlete of the Year Award.
Ritter led the women’s soccer team with six goals in a season in which the Pirates qualified for the Big East Tournament and captured their first postseason victory since 1999.
