Iditarod veteran Paul Gebhardt became the third musher to scratch from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Tuesday. He scratched in Nikolai for the welfare of his dogs. He was the second musher to scratch for that reason.
Early Tuesday morning, Melissa Owens and Zoya DeNure scratched in Rainy Pass -- Owens for a leg injury, DeNure for her dogs.
Gebhardt, who wore Bib No. 34, was in 10th place when he scratched. Gebhardt has finished second in the race twice. This was his 15th Iditarod.
