Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race musher Hugh Neff was first to reach the Yukon River Friday morning, according to the Iditarod Trail Committee. Neff arrived in Anvik at 5:26 a.m. with 12 dogs.
Upon reaching the Anvik checkpoint, Neff was served an “eight-course” meal prepared on camp stoves at the local community center by staff from the Millennium Alaskan Hotel: the traditional seven-course meal hotel staff have served the first musher to the Yukon for 25 years, plus an “after-dinner mint” of $3,500 in cash.
The hotel’s “1st to the Yukon” award will be re-presented to Neff at the Iditarod banquet in Nome on March 20.
