The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race’s leaders reached Koyuk on Monday morning with Dallas Seavey remaining in the lead by checking in at 3:17 a.m., more than ninety minutes ahead of Aliy Zirkle.
The lead shrunk to twenty-two minutes since Dallas Seavey hit the trail at 8:29 a.m. and Zirkle following at 8:51 a.m. Monday.
Aaron Burmeister arrived in Koyuk at 6:43 a.m. Monday and last year’s champ, John Baker reached the checkpoint at 7:48 a.m. holding fourth place.
Fifth place remained a close race with only fifteen minutes separating teams who checked into Koyuk close to 8:30 a.m. Monday.
Peter Kaiser clocked in at 8:22 a.m. rounding off the top five leaderboard, but he’s followed by veteran mushers Mitch Seavey and Ramey Smyth.
Fifty-seven teams were still on the trail according Iditarod race standings with twelve rookies in this year’s race.
Nine teams are out of the race with eight scratched and Jake Berkowitz withdrawing from the race in Unalakleet with a hand injury.
