It takes a large team to put together the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, and this year Iditarod officials estimate that about 1,500 people have volunteered for the race, contributing about 35,000 hours of work.
The volunteers come from across the world, and during volunteer check-ins Thursday accents from as far off as Scotland could be heard.
Wendy Slaby, from Cincinnati, said she can remember watching the race on TV with her father when she was a child -- and telling him that one day she would be involved in the race. She’s now been a volunteer at the re-start in Willow for the last five years.
“I just love the whole attitude, and the whole Iditarod feeling is fun.” Slaby said.
Iditarod officials said volunteers offer their services throughout the year, including the off-season between races.
