Iditarod officials say Girdwood musher Nick Petit scratched at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, just outside of Unalakleet.

According to a release from Iditarod headquarters, Petit claimed fatigue as the primary reason for leaving, saying that “he felt it was best that he call it a race and try again next year.”

This year's race was the fourth Iditarod for Petit, whose gone from a back-of-the-pack finisher in his first two races to a sixth-place finish in last year's race. Petit has been a strong contender for much of this year's race and kept well toward the front of the top ten.

Petit and his his team are being transported by volunteers to Unalaklee, race officials said Saturday.
