Thousands of people flocked to downtown Anchorage on Saturday, to watch the ceremonial start of the Iditarod. While it is a major event for Alaskans, it also draws international attention. Iditarod officials say that there is usually about 5,000 people who watch the ceremonial start in Anchorage (though they estimate there were more than that this year) and about a third of them are from out of the country.
