Cruising in just before sunset, Two Rivers Aliy Zirkle has once again reached Unalakleet to win an award for being first to the Bering Sea coast.
Repeating her feat from 2012, Zirkle arrived at 4:39 p.m. Saturday, hours after her early morning exit from Kaltag.
The Wells Fargo Gold Coast award includes $2,500 in gold nuggets, mined locally in Nome, as well as a gold cup. Zirkle will be presented with the award on Sunday March 16, during the Iditarod Finishers Banquet in Nome.
Zirkle has finished the Iditarod 12 times. In her two most recent runs she's taken second, in 2013 to Mitch Seavey and in 2012 to Dallas Seavey.
